Knicks’ RJ Barrett goes cold late in loss to Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — RJ Barrett was cooking through three quarters Tuesday night, leading the Knicks with 25 points as they sought to hold on for their 10th consecutive win.

But Barrett hit a wall in the fourth, missing eight of his last nine field-goal attempts in the Knicks’ come-from-ahead loss to the Hornets at the Garden.

Immanuel Quickley also was 0-for-4 in the fourth quarter, as the Knicks finished the final period hitting just five of 26 shot attempts and missing all nine tries from 3-point range.

“At some point they started doubling the pick-and-roll. Whenever they did that I was just trying to make the right pass and when I got it back I was trying to be aggressive,” Barrett said after the game. “I don’t think my shots were horrible. A lot of the shots I took were the same shots that I took before, they just didn’t go in.”

“I think we just missed some shots, we had a lot of bunnies that we missed. Stuff like that. It happens sometimes.”

The Knicks offered no immediate update on the status of starting point guard Jalen Brunson for the game Thursday against the Kings.

He missed the previous two games with a sore left foot.

Tom Thibodeau on guard Daquan Jeffries, who was signed Sunday to a 10-day contract, then assigned to G-League Westchester: “Just continue to work. We liked him a lot last year and then the fall, summer, we liked him. … He got hurt in training camp, so that set him back a little bit, but played very well in the G-League, so we like him a lot.”

Trevor Keels, the Knicks’ second-round pick out of Duke, was not signed to a second 10-day deal and is now an NBA free agent, with Westchester still holding his G-League rights.

Center Moses Brown is being added on a two-way NBA contract, the team announced. He appeared in 34 games for the Clippers this seaon, averaging 4.6 points and 4.1 rebounds.
