Jack Beasley was 17 years old when he was stabbed to death barely two weeks before Christmas in 2019.
Jack was stabbed in the heart and later died in hospital after a fight broke out between his group and the five teens in Surfers Paradise.
One boy, who was 15 at the time, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder and two counts of committing malicious acts.
He must serve 70 per cent of the sentence – or seven years.
On Friday, the teen will appeal the sentence in a bid to reduce it to five years.
If he is successful, he will leave jail in 18 months, in time for his 21st birthday.

Jack’s parents, Brett and Belinda, are devastated by the news.
“It’s a kick in the guts for us, it really is, it’s terrible and devastating,” Brett Beasley said.
“We don’t want to have to do this, we thought the court was all over and done with.
“He got 10 years to start with and to me, that’s nothing for murder, it’s absolutely nothing.”
The laws passed parliament a few weeks ago and came into effect on what would have been Jack’s 21st birthday.
Over the Easter weekend, police said nearly 600 people were searched in Queensland’s nightlife precincts, resulting in six knife seizures.
