Kevin Walters has reportedly been sacked by the Brisbane Broncos.

The Broncos have severed ties with their coach following a club-wide review into the team’s shocking downfall in the 2024 season, in which they finished 12th.

Walters was given his marching orders on Thursday evening, with the club terminating his contract that was due to expire in 2026.

Broncos chairman Karl Morris told News Corp: ‘We feel deeply for Kev.

‘He will always be a respected guy and a legend of the Broncos and he will always be treated that way.

‘Of course I am shocked. This is a huge job and a pressure job at the Broncos.

‘We have great appreciation for Kevvie’s efforts and wish him well.’

The Broncos playing group learnt of Walters’s fate on Thursday evening, the report adds.

Walters is a Brisbane legend having won five premierships during his glittering playing career with the club that saw him make 241 first grade appearances.

He took over from Anthony Seibold in 2021 and took the club from rock bottom of the NRL ladder to premiership runners-up last year.

The 56-year-old had received public support from Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy two weeks ago, but the board have seemingly had a change of heart and wielded the axe.

He coached 99 games with the Broncos, boasting a 50.5 per cent win record.

Walters had recently hired a new coaching team, consisting of Trent Barrett and Ben Te’o.

The Broncos’ search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
