Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos may be “sports parents” — but it doesn’t mean they are fans of all athletics. On this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly & Mark, the longtime married couple joked that they had to “draw straws” over who had to go to their daughter’s field hockey games.
During the opening chat, Consuelos read a list of “bucket list sports experiences,” which included the U.S. Open, the Masters, going to the Women’s College World Series and “whatever game your kid is playing in.” However, the final one drew an incredibly honest response from Ripa.
“I can tell you — as sports parents, when our daughter had a field hockey game, we would draw straws,” she recalled. “Short straw had to go to the game. Because, oh boy.”
When the audience “awed,” Ripa fired back, “Don’t aw. You didn’t see her play!” before reminding Consuelos of the time he double-checked that their now 22-year-old daughter, Lola, actually wanted to “continue through” playing the sport.
While they said she’s a “great athlete,” they felt as though field hockey was more of a “social aspect” since her friends were involved in the sport.

“I haven’t quite understood the rules yet. I watched many hours of that game and I don’t understand … There was a lot of whistleblowing, a lot of stopping, a lot of going and stopping,” Consuelos explained, while Ripa quipped, “And a lot of us watching our daughter sit in the grass on her cellphone.”
Lola wasn’t the only one of their children who was shaded on this morning’s episode. When talk began of a rivalry football game at their youngest son Joaquin’s college in Michigan, Ripa decided that they would be there for the event — even though it’s on Thanksgiving.
“Do you think Joaquin will want us up there?” Consuelos asked, to which Ripa replied, “I don’t care. Whoever pays for the tuition decides where Thanksgiving is.”
