Katie Holmes’ stylist has spoken.
The “Dawson’s Creek” alum practically broke the internet when she paired what many assumed was a blue satin minidress over a pair of jeans at iHeartRadio Z100’s Jingle Ball 2022 — but it turns out, the piece was actually a top.
Stylist Brie Welch explained the thought process behind Homes’ viral look to the New York Times, sharing that they wanted to give off “a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there.”
The celeb stylist said that her client’s early aughts style — which featured a blue satin bustier top from Tove, Reformation “Wilder” wide leg jeans ($148) and Maison Margiela sneakers — was an attempt to mix casual and dressy items.
“We decided the rich color and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans,” she told the newspaper.

The decision to wear kicks was down to Holmes herself, with Welch revealing, “On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa,” adding “and nothing is more comfortable!”
The stylist also shared the New York Times piece on her Instagram Story, writing at the bottom of the image “AND IT’S A TOP.”
Her message likely comes as a relief to the horrified milennials who shared their opinions of the look in droves this week.
One Twitter user wrote, “this trend reared its ugly head years ago and honestly how dare Katie Holmes have the audacity to try to bring it back,” while another went a bit more extreme, tweeting “Katie Holmes should be in prison for this.”
While many have sighed in relief that dresses over jeans aren’t back (yet), we have a feeling Holmes might have inspired other celebs to try the look.
