A major incident is unfolding in the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie after police rushed to confront a gunman.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, Western Australia Police said officers were called to reports of an armed man in an alleyway near Whitlock St.

‘Firearms were discharged and the man received serious injuries,’ a spokesman said. ‘There is no threat to public safety.’

The man is in his 50s.

Police requested locals avoid the area with about 20 officers, including forensic specialists, at the scene.
