Jharrel Jerome Kept ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Cliffhanger Role a Secret From His Family: “It’s Fun to See It All Come to Life”

Jharrel Jerome’s jaw-dropping appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wasn’t just a surprise for viewers – his own family was also left in the dark. The actor attended the Tribeca Film Festival for the first time ever to celebrate the premiere of his upcoming Max miniseries Full Circle on Sunday (June 10). While there, Jerome was happy to chat with Decider about swinging into the popular Marvel franchise.

The native New Yorker said he didn’t expect the excitement surrounding his role, which is revealed at the end of the movie and threatens to shatter the cinematic universe, as we know it.

“I was just talking to my friend about it yesterday. I wasn’t expecting all this reception. I’m getting calls from family members who were like ‘Oh, you didn’t tell me you were in the movie,’” Jerome shared. “It’s a spoiler if I tell people, so I just kept it a secret. It’s fun to just see it all come to life.”

As for that role? Spoilers past this point, but in the final scene of the movie, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) comes face to face with his alternate universe double Miles G. Morales (voiced by Jerome), who isn’t that universe’s Spider-Man… He’s the Prowler, the villain who the OG Miles fought in Into the Spider-Verse; though in that movie, the baddie was his uncle. Needless to say, with the two Miles facing off at the very end of the movie, fans are anticipating an epic showdown in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is expected to hit theaters on March 29, 2024.

As for what comes next for Jerome in the anticipated threequel, he is keeping his lips sealed tighter than a mouth covered in Spider-Man’s webs.

“I don’t know what’s gonna come of it but I’m excited to be part of it,” Jerome said.

In the meantime, Jerome is busy with Full Circle, an upcoming crime series directed by Steven Soderbergh. In the Max series, Jerome plays Aked, a young man who is caught up in a dangerous human trafficking scheme. “He has a roller coaster of a journey. He has a lot of things that he learns about himself. In some moments, you don’t know if it’s too late for him,” Jerome said.

The actor praised Ed Solomon’s original script and Soderbergh’s direction, saying they were the key reasons he was drawn to the project. “The script was just so dense and so intricate. I feel like it was such a challenge for anybody who worked on it,” Jerome recalled. “And it was Steve Soderbergh — he’s a legend. He’s iconic. When you get a call from him, you want to take it.”

The festival screened the first two episodes of the series, which also stars Claire Danes, Zazie Beetz and Timothy Olyphant, but Jerome said there’s plenty more to come. “It turns up – it gets crazy towards the end,” Jerome teased.

Full Circle is set to premiere July 13, 2023 on Max. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently playing in theaters.
