Jerry Jones details ‘issue’ standing in way of Cowboys signing Odell Beckham

There’s no question Jerry Jones would love to see Odell Beckham Jr. in a Cowboys uniform, but the wide receiver’s health remains a sticking point as he wraps his mini free-agency tour.

Speaking Tuesday on 105.3 “The Fan,” Jones opened up about Beckham’s visit to Dallas, which included a courtside experience at Monday’s Mavericks game with playmakers Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs. Much like his previous visits with the Giants and Bills, Beckham did not work out for the Cowboys as he is roughly 10 months removed from a torn ACL suffered in February’s Super Bowl.

In light of the circumstances, Jones elaborated on his confidence level — or lack thereof — in locking a player in the team hasn’t seen in action post-injury.

“I’m not confident at all,” Jones said, via Mark Lane of WFAA Sports, per Pro Football Talk. “And, so, that’s the issue. Now, we all realize that issue of health, that issue of availability is here every time. Just this one is very obvious and very pointed toward his injury that occurred last year in the Super Bowl. We got a good beat on that. We got a great read on his career.”

Beckham, 30, scored a touchdown for the Rams early in February’s Super Bowl before he went down with an injury. Los Angeles persevered, however, and defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20.

Jones, whose Cowboys are very much in the NFC playoff race, added how Dallas brass has much to work with in terms of analyzing Beckham’s resume.

“It’s not like a draft pick coming at you. You got a lot of history here and you can take a good look at, not only the obvious and that’s his performance, but also any issues regarding health. So, all of this we got to come in with our eyes wide open and it has to be addressed, and that’s when you can see if you can make a deal or not,” Jones said.

The Cowboys have been the most vocal in the pursuit of Beckham’s services and on Monday night, Mavericks fans campaigned on their behalf.

During Dallas’ 130-111 win over the Phoenix Suns, Mavericks fans erupted with an “OBJ” chant during the third quarter.

A former first-round pick, Beckham spent the first five seasons of his career with the Giants, who selected him 12th overall in 2014. He was traded to Cleveland five years later and had a tumultuous breakup with the Browns last November. He spent the latter half of the 2021 season with the Rams.
