Jeremy Renner Names Powerful Inspiration Behind His Snow Plow Accident Recovery

Since his accident, Jeremy Renner has been on the road to recovery, and there was one special person who stayed right by his side through it all — his mother, Valerie Cearley. In “Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview — A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph,” the actor recalled his mom reading to him. “So she’s reading Stephen King — some, like, horror thing,” he said. “But she just wants to read like she’s reading Dr. Seuss to me, like, ‘How now, brown cow?'” His mom mentioned that she wanted him to hear her voice and to know she was there.

In the hour-long special, Renner credited his mother as the reason he was able to fight for his life. “I think I’m mentally strong,” he said. “I don’t know about other people. I know I’m mentally strong, and I get that from my mom.” Later in the interview, Cearley mentioned that she offered to make a big bonfire to burn the snow plow that almost took his son’s life.

On January 5, Renner posted an update to Twitter of his “first shower” in the hospital. His sister was giving him a massage on the head, and his mother was by his bedside. “A ‘not no [sic] great’ ICU DAY, turned to amazing spa day with my sis and mama,” he wrote. “Thank you sooooo much.”
