Jenny Slate and Chris Evans had no idea their friendship would blossom into a relationship, especially because the comedian was married when they first met.
According to Vulture, the two actors crossed paths in 2016 when they did a chemistry read for the film “Gifted.” At the time, Slate had already been married to film editor Dean Fleischer-Camp for four years. However, Slate and Evans’ chemistry was undeniable, and the “Captain America” actor knew the two would have a great relationship, whatever it looked like. Slate recalled how she felt after the audition to Vulture, saying, “I remember him saying to me, ‘You’re going to be one of my closest friends.’ I was just like, ‘Man, I f***ing hope this isn’t a lie, because I’m going to be devastated if this guy isn’t my friend.'” Luckily for Slate, she landed the role, which led to more hangouts with Evans.

The actor shared with the outlet that, at this point, her marriage was already “dissolving.” By May 2016, she and Fleischer-Camp had officially called it quits, per Us Weekly. Not long after, Evans confessed his feelings for his co-star, and she couldn’t believe it. She told Vulture, “Eventually, when it was like, Oh, you have these feelings for me? I was looking around like, Is this a prank?” But it wasn’t a prank, and the two ended up dating for nearly one year.
