Japan Airlines launches new service so travelers can ditch suitcase

Like traveling light?

Well, one international airline has launched a clothes-sharing trial it hopes will lessen luggage, help the environment and create an all-round easier traveling experience.

The “Any Wear, Anywhere” trial is currently underway for travelers to Japan, run by Japan Airlines and partnering company Sumitomo Corporation.

It offers the opportunity for foreign tourists and business travelers to Japan to rent clothes for as little as $27.95 for up to two weeks.

Travelers can rent up to eight outfits in three sizes – small, medium and large – in smart, smart casual or mixed styles.

The chosen attire will be delivered to a traveler’s designated hotel.

In a statement, JAL hoped the trial would promote sustainability and improve the traveler experience.

“Travelers increasingly desire to make more sustainable choices regarding their travel destinations, accommodations, transportation etc., they still lack sufficient options,” the airline said.

“The concept of the Service is, therefore, to provide a travel experience with minimal luggage by offering clothing rentals at the destination, thereby creating environmental value.

“By expanding the use of the service, we aim to create an environment where travelers can use local options for all aspects of their clothing, food, and accommodation, transforming travel and business trips into more sustainable experiences.”

The clothes are available through an online shopfront; however, travelers with a spontaneous disposition need not inquire as the airline states reservations must be made at least one month in advance.

The trial period is set for July 5, 2023, to August 31, 2024.
