The Israeli military says seven soldiers have been killed in combat in southern Lebanon, a day after it announced a ground incursion into that country.

Fighting between Israeli troops and Hezbollah militants was ongoing in southern Lebanon on Wednesday (early Thursday AEST), both sides said in separate statements.

The announcement came as Israel sent more troops and artillery to the border area.
