Gypsy Rose Blanchard is a free woman. The 32-year-old, whose story inspired the Hulu crime drama The Act, was released from prison today after serving seven years for the murder of her mother. If you are itching to dive more into her story, look no further. We have you covered on every documentary and series that’s been made about Blanchard’s heartbreaking yet captivating life.
Blanchard is one of the most infamous victims of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, in which a caregiver fabricates their child’s illnesses in order to gain sympathy. In Gypsy’s case, her mother Dee Dee Blanchard falsely claimed she had muscular dystrophy, leukemia and asthma, subjecting her daughter to more than 30 unnecessary surgeries and forcing her to use a feeding tube and wheelchair, despite Gypsy being able to walk.
Desperate for a way out, Gypsy — whom Dee Dee also claimed had the mental capacity of a seven-year-old — asked her secret boyfriend Nick Godejohn to murder her mother. When they were caught, Gypsy was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison for second-degree murder, while Godejohn earned a life sentence.
