An investigation is underway into how a former inmate became a prison guard at Townsville Correctional Centre in North Queensland.

The revelation became public today after the employee was hired and worked at the centre earlier this year.

“Talk about putting the fox in charge of the hen house,” Shadow Corrective Services Minister Dale Last said.

“It defies belief that a former inmate of that centre was employed as a corrective services guard.”

The employee was suspended from duty as an investigation into the matter began.

Processes around criminal history checks are being reviewed.

“The Commissioner has advised that processes around criminal history checks are being reviewed,” Corrective Services Minister Nikki Boyd said.

“This will identify any improvements to existing systems.”
