Police are investigating after a person was found dead on a popular South Australian beach.

A passerby found the person unresponsive on the beach at Glenelg North, near the North Esplanade, at about 6.30am today.

Police and paramedics attended the scene, while the SES arrived to assist with creating a shelter for the body.

The investigation is in its early stages with police trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
