Cheers erupted onboard a flight after Cortnee Vine came off the bench to secure victory and claim a spot in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, for the first time.

3AW radio presenter Jacqueline Felgate posted a video from the plane, which showed the heart-melting moment fans lost it.

Nearly everyone on the plane was seen clapping following the penalty shoot-out.

Millions tuned into watch the match around the country, with packed out stadiums becoming a common sight.

But one of the more heartening moments was captured a wedding reception.

Wedding-goers were seen crowding around a table tensely watching the penalty shoot-out.

Melbourne’s Federation Square was a sea of green and gold as hundreds packed together to cheer on their heroes.

A roar of celebration followed the win, as some supporters began lighting flares and jumped for joy.

There were also gatherings at major sporting stadiums across the country, including a sold-out Brisbane Stadium.

Kerr started the match on the bench as her recovery from a calf injury continues.

Her 55th-minute introduction against France added impetus to Australia’s attack, however, though France’s defence could not be beaten.

After 120 minutes, the quarterfinal remained goalless and had to be decided on penalties – but the scoreline didn’t mean it wasn’t an entertaining match, or that there weren’t any opportunities created.

Both teams, in fact, had chances to take the lead in regulation time.

It was Vine, the 20th penalty taker in the shootout, who sealed victory for Australia, securing a 7-6 win on penalties and a semifinal against England.

Kerr said she was going to enjoy the moment before focusing on the semifinal.

“My calves are great – every day I feel better, obviously, with more training, more recovery, but I can’t even think about the next game. I’m just gonna enjoy tonight,” she said.
