Speaking to 9News after the royal commission’s final report was tabled, Lambie welcomed the recommendation for a new authority to focus on veterans’ wellbeing because of the Defence Force’s failings.
“The problem is the transition period, Defence has done it very poorly, if at all, for years,” she said.
“They’re not good at it, so something has to give here. And if you can’t do the job… then give it to somebody who can, because Defence has had years and years on that transition and has failed miserably.”
Lambie also called on the ADF to stop medically discharging personnel who still wanted to serve.
“Just because we’re a little bit broken, doesn’t mean we ‘re not worth our bloody weight in gold,” she said.

“We need to start keeping more of us in there. Because I think it’s extremely beneficial, and as well as that you’ll get a hell of a lot less suicides.
“Just because we’re hurt doesn’t mean we can’t do the bloody job. Give us a shot, for God’s sake. Break down those barriers, start doing it with the people you’ve got in there.
“I’m begging you to do that today, because that will save lives.”
