Hurricane Idalia hits Florida with 125 mph winds, flooding streets

MIAMI — Idalia has roared ashore in Florida, making landfall in the Big Bend region just before 8 a.m. Wednesday as a powerful Category 3 hurricane. It has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The latest path takes Idalia through Georgia and into the Carolinas through Wednesday evening.

Life-threatening storm surge is a major threat.

Storm surge is already flooding most of the coastal Tampa Bay area.

The storm surge could hit 11 feet near the Big Bend area and could reach 5 feet in the flood-vulnerable cities of Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina.

The heaviest rain over the next 12 to 24 hours will be in the Carolinas, where some areas could see close to 10 inches of rain.

By 7 a.m. Thursday, the heavy rain will be hitting North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and by late Thursday morning, Idalia will move off the coast.
