A man left social media users divided when revealing that he walked out of a job interview after waiting in reception for 35 minutes.

The anonymous British Reddit user left commenter torn after he admitted feeling ‘conflicted’ over his choice to ditch the prospective truck driving gig at a local bakery.

‘The way I’m seeing this is that if I was 35 minutes late for the interview with no explanation as to why I’m late, I’d have no chance of getting the job,’ the poster, writing as HachiTofu, explained.

Some praised the man for valuing his own time and refusing to accept the delay, but others said that he’d lost out on an opportunity he wanted and there good have been a good reason for the wait.

The author of the post said his interview was scheduled for 10am, and he arrived ten minutes early.

Receptionists promised the man he’d be seen in five minutes – but the time dragged on.

He added: ‘I figured they’re interviewing someone else or that they’re running behind, no big deal.

‘I’m then sitting waiting for 30 minutes with no one acknowledging my existence.’

He said there were people ‘walking by constantly’, including the receptionist who told him to wait.

‘I happen to look at the wall, which has the first aid staff information as well as fire marshals, and notice that the guy who’s in charge of my interview is on there,’ he continued.

‘The same guy who has walked by at least three times. It’s at this point I say enough is enough and sign myself out. It’s 10.35.

‘No one has bothered to explain any delays, interviewer has blanked me several times despite knowing I’m sitting there waiting.’

The Redditer later confirmed that at one pointed he checked if there was a delay he should be aware of, and was told to just ‘sit tight’.

While the driver feels like he dodged a bullet, he asked social media if he ‘should have been more patient’, fearing that walking out was unprofessional.

He was met with a wave of supportive comments, praising him for valuing himself.

‘More of us should walk out of interviews,’ one said. ‘If they refuse to tell you the baseline rate of pay… or ask you why manhole covers are round, they’re not worth your time.’

A second added: ‘Job interviews work two ways, you need to be sure you’d be happy spending 35+ hours a week working for them.

‘If they can’t even give you the common courtesy of an update, then that isn’t a working culture I would wish to be a part of.’

Some even shared their own similar experiences, as one person admitted to leaving after ‘around 40 minutes of waiting’.

‘The agency I’d gone through rang me in the car on my way home to ask if I’d come back and do the interview right now,’ they continued. ‘I told them to stuff it. I’d hired a car, driven 90 minutes to site, waited 40 minutes and their hiring manager “forgets what day it is”. Their loss frankly.’

But others felt that he could have done more to maintain professionalism.

‘Right or wrong, you lost the opportunity for a job you wanted,’ one simply advised.

A third poster took issue with the flurry of comments assuming the delay was a power-play tactic on the business’ behalf.

‘F***ing hell, there are a lot of people on here ready to assume the absolute worst of a company on the flimsiest of evidence.

‘What are the chances of it being an entirely accidental misreading of their calendar? The [interview] may not have been the most vital thing happening that day within the company, or it might have been any one of a thousand entirely innocent explanations.

‘Oh no, it’s a power play, or a deliberate snub, or a recruitment technique to weed out the uncommitted.

‘And then he flounced out without saying a word to anybody? That’s just being a d**k and not giving them a chance to explain or apologise.

‘I wouldn’t be chasing him down, because that’s not the attitude I’d want from my colleagues.

‘I sincerely hope they’re a fun and exciting place to work, with interesting challenges and they find the right fit.’
