It wasn’t “love in an elevator.”
Newlyweds left guests wondering if they skipped out after saying “I do” to start their honeymoon early when they got trapped in an elevator.
Right after exchanging vows, Victoria and Panav Jha missed their own wedding reception in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday as they waited to be rescued.
The couple who vowed “for better, for worse” had to put their commitment to the test just moments after tying the knot. While on their way to make their grand entrance as Mr. and Mrs. Jha, they got stuck in the hotel elevator for two hours on their special day.
“We got up maybe five feet, then boom we got stuck,” Panav told CNN of being trapped on the 16th floor of the Grand Bohemian Hotel.
“I could see a concrete wall in front of me and I could see a concrete wall behind me,” he said about the elevator doors, realizing, ‘That’s not normal.’”

The “elevator had a glitch and here we are. It had to happen with the groom and I both stuck in the elevator. So, at least it wasn’t just one of us,” Victoria told Queen City News.
Luckily, the newlyweds were not alone. Victoria’s sister and three other wedding guests were locked inside with them.

As they waited to be rescued, the group posted photos of the bride and groom crouched on the floor, calling for help.
Two hours later, the Charlotte Fire Department safely lifted the party of six through the top of the elevator.
“They harnessed me up, got me in full gear, and pulled me up four floors with a fireman,” Victoria added.
Her husband recalls the moment feeling like a spy: “I would say James Bond. Maybe Mission Impossible.”
Unfortunately, the rescue was too late to make it to the party, but the firefighters celebrated the moment by posing with the wedding party.

“WEDDING NIGHT RESCUE,” the firefighters wrote on Twitter. “6 people were trapped in a hotel elevator between the first and second floor. All 6 who Charlotte firefighters pulled to safety, were part of the Jha wedding party. Mr. and Mrs. Jha, we hope today is the start of a long and happy life.”
Although the couple was elated to get out of the elevator fiasco, they were disappointed to miss their special moment.
“We were not able to celebrate or do the last kisses or goodbyes. And that’s what put the damper on everything,” said Victoria. “That’s how the wedding night had to end.”
