Kings Park and Botanic Garden park rangers on their patrol earlier today noticed more than 400 Carbunup king spider orchids and 500 Collie spider orchids had been dug up and taken from the ground.

The stolen orchids hold no value in their current seed form, according to Kings Park and Botanic Garden officials.

“We consider it being targeted,” park director Sue McDougall said.

“We would consider that because you would know what you’re looking for.”

Kings Park research scientist Dr Belinda Davis said the threatened species were “basically irreplaceable”.

Police have begun an investigation into the crime, with the thieves facing a $500,000 fine if they are caught.
