Firefighters have been called to one of Sydney’s tallest residential towers after reports of multiple small fires in the basement.

NSW Fire and Rescue said around 500 people have been evacuated from the Greenland Centre building on Bathurst Street about 12pm today.

The first crew on the scene arrived to find a fire burning in garbage bins in the basement.

Eighteen firetrucks and 72 firefighters are on the scene to control the fire, which has now been contained.

There is heavy smoke in parts of the building, Inspector Steve Brown from Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed.

Police and ambulances have also responded to the incident.

The Greenland Centre Building is one of Sydney’s tallest residential towers, boasting more than 450 apartments over 235 metres.
