Bargain-hunting shoppers have discovered a little-known hack for saving hundreds on groceries at the supermarket.

Coles customers can ask staff members for a ‘rain check’ on out-of-stock sale items so they can get it at a discounted price on their next shop – even if the item isn’t on sale anymore.

Investment guru Queenie Tan from Sydney shared the trick during an interview on the Australian Finance Podcast after she found out about it on a recent shopping trip.

‘Essentially what happens is you see something on sale something that you usually buy…and it’s so cheap that it’s completely sold out…you can ask the staff for a rain check,’ Queenie explained.

‘They’ll write down on this little slip of paper what you’re looking to buy, the price that it’s on sale for and then the next time it’s in stock you can actually bring in the little slip of paper and then buy it for that discounted price.’

Rain checks allow customers to buy an out-of-stock item at its sale price for up to 30 days after they receive the slip.

The hack can only be used in store so is not offered on online orders and there is a limit on how many of one item shoppers can buy with a rain check.

A clip of Queenie explaining hack was shared to TikTok and had hundreds in the comments thankful for the money-saving tip.

‘I just learnt something new,’ one viewer wrote.

‘This is the first time I’ve actually been taught what a rain check is,’ a second said.

‘I kid you not. Just in morning I was at Coles. One lady was asking for rain check and I wondered what is was for! Now I see this,’ a third commented.

Others said they had been using rain checks for years.

‘It blows my mind that people don’t know this but maybe it’s because I work there,’ someone replied.

‘We do this at Liquorland too because we’re associated with Coles,’ another pointed out.

There was some confusion however with one asking: ‘Have they reinstated them? They stopped during the pandemic’.

Coles and Woolworths ceased rain checks in 2020 throughout the pandemic and lock downs.

Coles have renewed the offer but Woolworths has kept it on hold.
