Police said the boy was discovered outside the home on Gladstone Rd in Dandenong North about 2.40am on Friday

A newborn baby is fighting for its life after being found allegedly abandoned under a carport in Melbourne’s south-east overnight hours after it was born.

Police said the boy was discovered outside the home on Gladstone Rd in Dandenong North about 2.40am on Friday.

The infant’s mother, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to hospital where officers said she remained under police guard.

Housemates of the 25-year-old woman told Nine News on Friday morning they didn’t know she was pregnant.

‘We just woke up and there was an incident and we had to call triple-0, and they came and helped us,’ they said

‘We are happy that the baby is okay, and we are still praying for her and the baby.

‘We are ready to support her when she gets out of hospital.’

The housemate told Nine the new mother was a lovely woman who worked in aged care.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under still investigation.
