The plan was unveiled by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after premiers and territory leaders dialled in remotely for a national cabinet meeting on Friday.

Croucher said most Australians won’t see the relief in the bills immediately.

“Australians will be better off than they would have been, not better off than they are,” he said.

“The relief will be handed to the states and they will distribute it to the people in the state.”

The plan will be about protecting Australians from the increase that is still to come, Croucher said.

State and territory treasurers will work on their own packages to provide support to residents and the relief will come into effect next year.

Under the plan, there will be fewer incentives for caps on price and coal.

Nationals Leader David Littleproud told Weekend Today that the challenge for the government would be the decision to take away incentives for the industry.

“What you do by putting a price cap? You take away the incentive for gas companies to do more. You give investment signals to go to other countries,” he said.

“This is a challenge that the government, while taking the right step in giving relief to households.”
