A man killed in a horror accident at Penola in South Australia on Friday night has become the 18th person to die on the state’s roads just weeks into 2023.

Police were called to the scene at the Riddoch Highway after reports that a truck had veered off the road and crashed into a tree just after 10pm on Friday.

The sole occupant of the truck, a 49-year-old man from Mount Gambier, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have cordoned off the highway between Robe Road and Mount Burr Road and motorists are urged to seek alternate routes.

The tragedy marks the 18th death on South Australian roads, just six weeks into the new year.

It’s the highest death toll recorded by this time of year in a decade. 

By mid-Febraury in 2022, just four people had died on state roads.
