The impact of the crash split the bus in two. Luckily there were no passengers onboard

A driver has been rushed to hospital after becoming trapped in the wreckage of a horror bus crash that saw the vehicle sliced in half by a large tree.

Emergency services were called to Modbury Interchange, near the Tea Tree Plaza Interchange Park’n’Ride, in northeast Adelaide, about 9:30am on Friday.

The force of the collision split the front of the bus in half, with the tree trunk remaining inside the middle of the vehicle.

The front seats of the bus were crumpled and glass shards from the shattered windshield were strewn across the crash site.

SA Metropolitan Fire Services firefighters worked for 20 minutes to free the driver, a man in his 40s, using specialised cutting tools.

The driver suffered significant injuries and was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Luckily, there were no other passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.

The bus interchange at Tea Tree Plaza is currently closed, affecting 20 bus routes.
