The man was stabbed outside Guzman Y Gomez in Marrickville on Monday night

A man has been stabbed to death on a busy street outside a popular restaurant.

Emergency services raced to the scene on Marrickville Road in Marrickville in Sydney’s inner-west about 7.40pm on Monday following reports of a stabbing.

Police and paramedics performed CPR on the wounded man outside a Guzman Y Gomez restaurant but he couldn’t be revived and died at the scene.

The incident sparked emotional scenes where those who knew the dead man wanted to see him and had to be held back by officers, with one man tasered by police.

Several other men were escorted away after a heated discussion and the area was then cordoned off.

Marrickville Road has been closed in both directions at the intersection of Illawarra Road and Garners Avenue and surrounding streets have also been blocked off as a crime scene was established by police.

It is expected the street closures will remain for sometime and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

One overseas visitor in the area just after the alleged stabbing, Karen, said she found the incident ‘sad’ and had always felt safe in Australia.
