Police are investigating a shocking machete attack at Broadmeadows Central on Tuesday

Confronting footage has emerged of a terrifying broad daylight brawl in a shopping centre carpark, just four weeks after Victoria’s machete ban came into effect.

Two groups of males began fighting in front of horrified shoppers in the carpark of Broadmeadows Central in Melbourne’s north shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

The footage began with two males slashing each other with machetes.

As the pair dragged each other to the ground, other men were seen running in to join the brawl as shocked bystanders locked themselves in their cars.

A boy was injured during the clash and later rushed to hospital.

In an ironic twist, the brawl unfolded across the road from a machete amnesty bin.

It’s one of 45 bins across Melbourne for people to dispose weapons in the wake of Victoria’s ban on the sale and possession of machetes.

The ban was fast-tracked to come into effect on September 1 to tackle the state’s escalating crime crisis.

Others involved fled the scene before police arrived.

Victoria Police has launched an investigation into the brawl.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

The latest incident comes just days after two young boys were stabbed to death while walking home from basketball in Melbourne’s west on September 6.

Dau Akueng, 15, and his friend Chol, 12, were ambushed and stabbed by a machete-wielding group and found critically injured in nearby streets.

Both died at the scene.

Seven teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 have since been charged.

More than 1,300 machetes have been voluntarily surrendered by the public in Victoria since September 1, along with an additional 3,400 from retailers.

‘We are seeing that the ban on both the sale and possession of machetes is getting these dangerous weapons off our streets,’ Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said.

However, state opposition leader Brad Battin said that machete amnesty bins aren’t the answer and that the government’s ban has so far failed.

It comes as a Townsville hunting store 2,500km in North Queensland received an official warning from Victorian authorities for selling machetes online.

‘They’re bullying Queensland businesses. Consumer Affairs has simply spotted on our website that we had machetes for sale,’ store owner Anthony Pagan said.

‘There was no billboard taken out in Victoria, no targeted campaign. Bureaucracy in Victoria doesn’t want to admit they made a mistake. ‘
