A Victoria Police Highway Patrol veteran declared ‘I don’t care about speed’ as he drove at up to 230km/h to a job, a court has heard.

Leading Senior Constable Bradley Beecroft was charged after he travelled at a high speed to help an injured colleague who was involved in a collision on the side of a freeway.

He appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court today for a contest hearing, which will run over four days.

Dashcam vision along with police body-worn camera footage was played in court today, where he was recorded saying: “I don’t care about speed” after passing a speed camera.

He and his partner were responding, under lights and sirens, to another officer who had been rear-ended on the Hume Highway near Eurora in Victoria’s north-east.

He then activated lights and sirens as well as the in-car camera, engaging in what’s called “urgent duty driving”.

The court heard the injured officer had said on the radio he was injured, “dazed and confused”.

Beecroft’s partner today told the court he was not concerned enough to tell the accused to slow down.
