A young girl has helped steer her school bus to safety after the driver suffered a heart attack while at the wheel.

The bus came to a stop after hitting a median strip near the intersection of Southport Nerang Road and Olsen Avenue at Southport on the Gold Coast about 3.30pm today.

There were 25 students from Aquinas College on board at the time, and no one was injured.

Paramedics described the actions of the young girl as “remarkable”.

The principal of Aquinas College released a statement this afternoon, saying: “I would like to commend the actions of the students and staff today to ensure that all members of our school community remained safe.”

The driver was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
