A gas explosion inside a Perth kitchen has left a 34-year-old man with severe burns to much of his body.

The explosion was enough to shatter windows on Clemham Way, Kelmscott and send neighbours running before 7pm on Monday.

Quick-thinking first responders rushed the victim into a neighbour’s bath and covered him in cold water.

However, the man’s injuries were severe, with skin coming away from his legs, arms and neck.

Neighbour Malcolm Thiel was home when he heard the loud noise.

“There was this explosion and I thought ‘blooming hell, what the hell was that?'” Thiel said.

“He was burnt, I couldn’t see his face because he was bent right over in pain,” Thiel said.

The man’s 30-year-old partner was home at the time but was not injured.

The couple went out into the street to seek help as smoke billowed from inside their home.

Neighbour Paul Anderson said the man was “in total shock”.

“I brought him in, stuck him under the shower and the poor bloke was obviously in pain, he was screaming out,” Anderson said.

“There were burns pretty well all over his face and hands.”

The victim told first responders he had been cooking at the time and a butane gas bottle near the stove combusted.

He was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital where he is likely to remain.

Police are investigating the cause of the explosion.
