A swimmer drowned at South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Wednesday

A swimmer has drowned at a public pool after they suffered a medical episode in front of shocked onlookers, including schoolchildren.

Emergency services, including two ambulance crews were called to the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Oaklands Park in Adelaide’s south shortly after 3.40pm on Wednesday following reports of an unresponsive patron in the water.

Paramedics pulled the swimmer from the pool and performed CPR but were unable to resuscitate them.

It’s understood the swimmer suffered a medical episode in the pool. 

Parents were called to pick schoolchildren up early following the incident, The Advertiser reported.

A steady stream of families were seen entering the facility by 5pm.

The main competition pool at the centre remained closed to the public on Wednesday night.

Reporters at the scene were denied entry to the facility and staff were unable to comment on the tragedy.

The South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre is run by the YMCA on behalf of the the state government.

It serves as Adelaide’s primary public pool.

The facility consists of four pools, a small waterplay area, gym and sauna.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted South Australia Police and SA Health for comment.
