‘Happy Gilmore 2’ scoop gets delivered on Cleveland sports talk radio

A sequel nearly 30 years in the making appears to be on the horizon.

Actor Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the 1996 Adam Sandler classic “Happy Gilmore,” revealed in an appearance on the “Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima” on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland that a sequel is apparently in the works.

McDonald was asked if McGavin was his favorite role he’s ever played.

“I’ve had some favorite roles, I gotta say it’s top three,” he answered, before dropping the bombshell.

“Here’s a quick intel. I saw Adam two weeks ago. He says, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this!’ I said, ‘What?’ How about that? He shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’”

He joked: “Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t want to be a liar,” before reaffirming that Sandler “did show me that.”

“It’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit,” McDonald said.

McDonald explained why he relished the role of McGavin.

“The best way to play a bad guy like Shooter McGavin is to bring it in a smarmy kind of way but uplift the lead guy,” he said.

Carl Weathers, the actor who played Chubbs in “Happy Gilmore,” died earlier this year at 76 years old.

“That’s what bad guys are for. I know I’m going down in the end because that’s the way it was written, but it’s just a blast to play that kind of stuff, and I enjoyed it so much.”

Fielding a comment from Carman about how he enjoyed passing the film down to his kids, McDonald agreed that it was cool that his character has transcended generational divides.

“People love to hate the shooter,” he said. “I get it generationally. Grandparents and children watching it together.”
