A tropical low in the Coral Sea looks increasingly likely to develop into a tropical cyclone – but storm-battered Queensland won’t be in the firing line.
The Bureau of Meteorology rates the chances of the weather system becoming a cyclone as increasing from tomorrow to next Tuesday, before decreasing again.
The probability peaks at a “high” 55 per cent from late Friday to late Sunday.
But, “there is no threat of a direct impact on the Queensland coast”, the Bureau said.
Weatherzone reported that the only noticeable impact might be an increase in ocean swell later this week, depending on how fast the system gains strength.
While the tropical low had developed off Australia, it had earlier been warned that there was a possibility that, if it attained cyclone status, it could be drawn westward to Queensland.
Victoria roasts on hottest day of summer
It would have been the third tropical cyclone to hit the state since December, following Jasper and Kirrily.
Instead, residents can breathe a sigh of relief.
