A father who assaulted police and a paramedic in the middle of the road after they tried to help his brother’s girlfriend has escaped prison time.

Shocking footage shows the moment Luiz Rulon Hilton attacked a paramedic before pushing two police officers on a Gold Coast, Queensland highway on September 28, 2020.

The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of seriously assaulting a police officer and one count of serious assault of a public officer in Southport District Court on Monday.

Paramedics were called to Marine Parade in Labrador to help a woman who was the girlfriend of Hilton’s younger brother.

The brother reportedly became hostile towards paramedics because of their ‘delayed response time’, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Police attempted to arrest the brother as Hilton and two other men gathered next to officers.

Hilton can be heard in bodycam footage yelling, ‘That’s my brother!’ as police arrested the man.

They advised the 34-year-old to ‘move back’ before Hilton lashed out at the officers and a scuffle broke out.

The brawl spilled out onto the middle of the road, forcing one vehicle to brake.

Hilton pushed one police officer onto the road, which caused him to sprain his arms.

The other officer, a senior constable, also suffered sprains and cuts when Hilton pushed him in the face and forced him to the ground.

Paramedic Adam Flory was also pushed in the face during the scuffle.

He told media outside the court that the assault was not acceptable.

‘We’re here to help you, we’re not here to harm you. And we don’t want to be harmed while we’re doing our job as well,’ Mr Flory said.

‘Paramedics generally come to work to do good…it’s not ok to verbally abuse or assault a paramedic.’

The two other men with Hilton fled the scene before he was arrested.

The court heard that Hilton was remorseful for his actions.

His family were reportedly gathered on Marine Parade at the time to mark the anniversary of his brother’s death before the commotion unfolded.

Hilton was sentenced to nine months imprisonment but with an immediate release on parole.
