Confronting images obtained by 9News showed a car on fire on the side of the M5 Motorway at Revesby, approaching The River Road exit at about 1pm.
Two eastbound lanes were closed on the motorway and drivers were told to avoid the area.

Drivers can be seen getting out of their vehicles to inspect the blaze as cars slowly creep past.
The fire has been contained and the burnt out vehicle was removed from the side of the highway. Traffic has resumed in both directions.
