Giannis Antetokounmpo signs $186 million contract extension with Bucks

Giannis Antetokounmpo is not going anywhere for awhile.

The Bucks’ big man broke the news himself Monday that he has reached an extension with the team.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the extension is for three years and $186 million, with Antetokounmpo holding a player option for the 2027-28 season.

Antetokounmpo previously could have opted to become a free agent in 2025.

Antetokounmpo is a seven-time All-Star, two-time MVP and was the NBA Finals MVP when the Bucks won the championship in 2021.

Two months ago, Antetokounmpo had left the option open that he could leave the Bucks if he did not feel like they were doing the most they could to compete.

“I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do. And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing,” Antetokounmpo told the New York Times.

The Knicks were thought to be a potential suitor if he left the Bucks.

However, since that time, the Bucks made a blockbuster trade with the Blazers for Damian Lillard, and this move seems to have tipped the scales on getting Antetokounmpo to commit to staying around a bit longer.
