A new online trend where influencers visit notorious crocodile-infested waters has been slammed by an expert who says it will end in ‘death’ for some of those involved.

Tommy Hayes ripped into attention-seeking Insta-celebs looking to bolster viewers by putting themselves in danger.

The veteran reptile handler, who is trained in crocodile management, trapping and tracking, filmed a video where he explained what happens in a worst case scenario if things go wrong

‘Unfortunately there’s still a bunch of, what’s the correct PC term… F****** d*******’s out there doing really, really stupid s***,’ Mr Hayes begins.

‘The problem with intentionally seeking out crocodile hotspots is that people may die.

As part of the trend ‘idiot’ influencers, who Mr Hayes refuses to name in order to not bring them extra attention, knowingly put themselves at risk before acting surprised on camera when a croc appears.

‘I’ve been sent a few videos recently of people ‘accidentally’ coming across big crocs in areas that are actually very well known for crocodiles,’ he said.

‘There’s also videos of them fishing in a spot (where) there are crocodile tracks all over the sand and they’re in thigh-deep water.

‘You’re f****** idiots.’

In some cases he believes crocodiles are intentionally lured into the open by people, who use fish guts and chickens on ropes.

But it’s not the influencers themselves who Mr Hayes is concerned about.

It’s not the influencers themselves who Mr Hayes is primarily concerned about, but those likely to copy-cat the seemingly fun behaviour, Mr Hayes warned

‘People need to understand, in Queensland, there’s no relocation. It’s farm or death,’ Mr Hayes continues.

‘They are basically selfish enough to put their own lives and the crocodile’s life at risk.

‘It’s not natural selection. These are people that are going into someone’s home, where they shouldn’t f****** be, and I don’t want to see anymore of these videos.’

How to practice croc-safety in QLD

Stay at least 5m from the water’s edge.

  • Crocodiles often hunt their prey at the water’s edge.

Dispose of your food and fish scraps in a bin or take them home.

  • Crocodiles are attracted by an easy meal, so make sure you take your food, fish scraps and bait away from the water, camp site and boat ramp. Any scraps left in these areas puts future visitors to the area at risk.

Keep your pets on a lead and away from the water’s edge.

  • Animals, and dogs in particular, are attractive prey to crocodiles.

Avoid using small watercraft such as kayaks and paddleboards.

  • The smaller the vessel, the greater the risk—crocodiles have taken people from small vessels.

Stay well away from crocodile traps.

  • Crocodile traps are designed to attract hungry crocodiles so avoid fishing and boating near them and never interfere with them. People who deliberately interfere with the operation of crocodile traps face potential penalties of over $15,000.
