Fresh gameplay was showcased at Gamescom 2024 this morning, highlighting exploration and puzzles in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle video game.

This time, Indiana Jones is heading into the sands of Egypt, facing dangers that even the most seasoned adventurer might shy away from.

Buried up to his head in the desert, Indy has found himself in yet another perilous situation, but for the whip-wielding archaeologist, danger is just another part of the job.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, coming to Xbox and PC later this year, is set to take players on an unforgettable journey across the globe.

Brought to life by Machine Games, known for their work on the Wolfenstein series, and executive produced by Todd Howard (Fallout, Skyrim), this game captures the essence of Indiana Jones while bringing some exciting new elements into play.

The journey will take players to iconic locations such as the Vatican, the Himalayas, and the Great Pyramids of Giza. Each environment is packed with secrets, puzzles, and treasures waiting to be discovered.

Set in the 1930s but designed to evoke the feel of the Indiana Jones films from the 1980s, The Great Circle is a love letter to fans.

Speaking at a preview event for the game, the developers said they had special access to the Lucasfilm archives. This access ensured the game’s authenticity, and used photos captured in the 1980s to recreate Harrison Ford’s likeness.

A key gameplay mechanic is Indiana Jones’ camera, which allows players to document their journey. Snap photos of key locations and artifacts, and use the journal to keep track of clues that will guide you through the adventure. Whether it’s uncovering hidden ruins or finding a lost relic, these tools are essential for success.

The gameplay occasionally transitions between first and third person, allowing players to experience the action from different perspectives.

The game’s world is richly detailed, with locations like hidden ruins inside the Sphinx, light and mirror puzzles that unlock ceremonial masks, and harrowing encounters like a collapsing room that drops Indy and his companion, Gina, into a scorpion pit. Machine Games has pushed exploration to new heights, making this their biggest game yet.

Joining Indy on this adventure is Gina, an Italian journalist with her own agenda — finding her sister. Her presence adds a new dynamic to the story, introducing dialogue choices and character interactions that shape the narrative.

Disguises also play a crucial role, with Indy able to switch outfits to sneak into restricted areas during key missions.

Indiana Jones wouldn’t be complete without his trusty whip, and The Great Circle ensures it plays a central role. Use it to swing across gaps, climb steep cliffs, and even grab distant objects. The whip isn’t just for show; it’s an essential tool for survival.

Along with the whip, players can earn adventure points to upgrade Indy’s skills, including perks like “True Grit,” which lets him survive a fatal blow.

The game emphasises puzzle solving with detailed sequences and hidden areas. Players will also be able to pick up and throw objects to distract enemies, use hand-to-hand combat, and sneak around in disguise, adding layers of strategy to the gameplay.

The world is meticulously detailed, and Indy’s voice actor Troy Baker (The Last of Us) has created an authentic and believable Indiana Jones.

With adjustable difficulty settings and a blend of linear and expansive levels, the game caters to both hardcore fans and newcomers alike.

Get ready to don the fedora and whip! Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set to release on Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 9, 2024, with a PlayStation 5 release to follow in 2025.
