A section of citybound lanes on the Frankston Freeway in Melbourne have been closed off due to a fatal collision.

It is believed a truck collided with a pedestrian on the Frankston Freeway near Seaford Road about 5.30am. 

A yet to be identified man died at the scene. 

The driver of the truck stopped at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated.

The freeway has been closed off between Seaford Road and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, causing increasing delays during the morning rush hour.

Drivers are being advised to take the Seaford Road exit and use Frankston-Dandenong Road and Peninsula Link to bypass the closed section. 

The southbound lanes on the freeway heading towards Frankston are still open. 

Motorists should allow extra time.
