The “Hard Knocks” cameras showed some love to a certain quarterback-turned-linebacker during Tuesday’s season premiere.
Jets linebacker Chazz Surratt, a former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback, made what was perhaps the biggest play of his career last Thursday when he intercepted Browns quarterback Kellen Mond during the Hall of Fame game, setting up Gang Green’s first touchdown of the preseason.
“That’s my f–king dog,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said after Surratt’s play, which was featured on Tuesday’s installment of the HBO docuseries.
Saleh, entering his third year as the Jets’ head coach, ran over to Surratt as he made his way off the field, patting him on the helmet and imploring him to “keep stacking them up.”

Saleh then repeatedly said on the sideline, “That guy’s so good.”
Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich also lauded Surratt’s efforts, telling the former Tar Heel: “Listen, you ain’t done.”

Surratt was originally recruited to play quarterback at North Carolina before making the switch to linebacker amid the arrival of a top recruit, quarterback Sam Howell.

Howell is now projected to the Commanders’ starting quarterback.

Surratt was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft (78th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings.
He played zero defensive snaps with the Vikings under then-head coach Mike Zimmer, playing exclusively on special teams in nine games.
The Vikings cut Surratt just before the start of the 2022 regular season.

Surratt then latched onto the Jets’ practice squad, playing in one game and making his first career tackle in the Jets’ 31-10 win over the Chicago Bears last Nov. 27.
He has appeared in 10 games in his career.
Surratt is currently in a battle with Nick Vigil and Zaire Barnes for a backup linebacker spot.
