Footy fans were enthralled by Carlton and Richmond’s blockbuster Round One clash on Thursday night, but couldn’t help but notice a jarring feature at the MCG.

The Blues ran out winners in a nail-biting contest, with Michael Voss’s side clinching a five-point win to get their season off to a flying start.

Over 83,000 fans descended on the MCG, with ground staff doing an exceptional job to ensure the venue was ready after Taylor Swift’s triple header of shows late last month.

But fans on social media spotted what appeared an obvious issue with the boundary line on Thursday: it was not fully curved.

‘Why is the boundary line now straight at the mcg?’ one fan pointed out on Reddit.

Another fan replied: ‘Lazy painting’.

A third fan said: ‘This is actually bothering me’.

But one eagle-eyed fan offered an explanation for the straight line.

‘Look at the fence, it’s running parallel to it,’ they said. ‘I’m sure there has to be a minimum clearance between bdy line and fence for players to be able to pull up in time.’

Elsewhere, Richmond defender Josh Gibcus has likely become the third AFL player in the first five games of 2024 to suffer a season-ending knee injury.

Gibcus, who missed all of the 2023 campaign with hamstring issues, landed awkwardly late in the second quarter of the Tigers’ clash with Carlton at the MCG on Thursday evening.

The 20-year-old’s right leg twisted following a marking contest and he immediately fell to the ground.

A distraught Gibcus left the field on a medical cart and was taken into Richmond’s rooms.

Gibcus’s injury follows two players – Keidean Coleman (Brisbane Lions) and Sam Docherty (Carlton) – rupturing their anterior cruciate ligament in last Friday night’s opening-round match at the Gabba.

The Tigers were already a player down on Thursday night after experienced midfielder Dion Prestia suffered a hamstring injury during the first term.

Prestia, who has a history of soft-tissues injuries, was subbed out of the match at quarter-time and replaced by Rhyan Mansell.
