A 15-year-old driver allegedly behind the wheel of his mum’s SUV crashed through a vape shop on a busy Brisbane street early today.
The car was flying down the street in Mount Gravatt East, south Brisbane, at about 5.15am before it ploughed into Pay ‘n’ Go tobacco store.
Exclusive footage obtained by 9News shows the unlicensed teen and his two passengers get out of the Hyundai after it crashed through the shopfront.
One of the teenagers was heard yelling “don’t call the cops” after they exited the damaged car, as the group announced their intention to rob the convenience store.
They were quickly arrested by police.
Worker Janelle sobbed as she told 9News about the scary early-morning smash.
“We’re pretty devastated about this sort of incident this morning,” she said.
“We’re very fortunate no one’s been injured in this incident,” Queensland Police Sergeant Simon Mortimer said.
And as for the reason behind the crash, Mortimer said it was likely the driver’s age and skill level.
The teenager was taken into the children’s hospital for an assessment and a routine drug and alcohol test.
After being questioned by police, he was allowed to head home.
The driver has been charged with wilful famage, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and unlicensed driving.
He’ll face a children’s court in January.
