A man has been arrested after a stolen car crashed into a barrier in Flemington, Melbourne.

Police officers arrived at Racecourse Road at about 1.45am on Monday following reports of a crash. 

Witnesses said a man and a woman were seen attempting to kick the windscreen of the crashed vehicle before taking some items and fleeing the scene.

Local officers, along with the Dog Squad, were quickly on the scene and started a search for the pair. 

Soon after, the Dog Squad found a man hiding in a recycling bin in a laneway nearby. 

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard. 

Initial investigations revealed the vehicle was stolen, with police discovering a firearm, drugs and a machete inside the car.   

Police are still on the hunt for the woman.
