A Queensland fisherman still can’t believe his luck after catching a giant bass grouper off North Stradbroke Island on Monday.

The catch of a lifetime took place about 40 kilometres off Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island.

The fish measured 175 centimetres long and weighed 80kg.

A Brisbane fisherman has had the catch of a lifetime over the weekend, catching a giant 175cm-long bass grouper just 40km off Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island.

The fisherman didn’t want to be identified.

The monster fish usually lives between 250 to 600 metres underwater.

Although the Queensland catch is a jaw-dropping one, the maximum size of a bass grouper is up to 100kg and 200 centimetres in length.

It’s not the first time the deep sea monsters have stunned people fishing in Australia.

Perth fisherman Cameron Windsor was taken by surprise when he caught a 50.6kg bass grouper off Rottnest in Western Australia in May.

She was visiting her son Simon and his wife when they went out on an early morning trip.

The 68-year-old felt a tug on her line but had no idea just how big the fish would be.

“The biggest fish I’ve caught before was a snapper about a foot long and so when this one took the bait on the bottom the tug on the line didn’t seem much,” Elcock said at the time.
