Police are desperately working to end a violent riot at a Perth detention centre which has continued for more than 10 hours and caused “extensive damage”.

Around 47 inmates are involved at Banksia Hill Detention Centre at Canning Vale, with a number of them on the facilty’s roof, throwing projectiles at police and correctional staff.

Smoke has been seen billowing out of the facility, with WA’s Department of Justice Corrective Service confirming the inmates have lit fires in accommodation blocks and other buildings, “causing extensive damage”.

“Attempts to negotiate with the detainees are continuing and a number remain on the roof of the centre, throwing projectiles at frontline staff,” a statement from the department reads.

Other inmates have been trying to stop emergency services putting out the fire, according to the department.

The riot has been going since the inmates left their cells about 8.30pm yesterday.

It is unclear at this stage what sparked that incident.

No injuries have been reported and authorities have confirmed there is no threat to the broader community.
