A line marking machine left to charge overnight sparked a huge fire that caused $500,000 in damage to one of Sydney‘s most prestigious private schools.

The massive blaze at St Ignatius’ College Riverview, on the north shore, broke out inside a 60m by 20m work storage shed at about 3.45am on Thursday.

Sixteen fire engines were called to the scene with shocking footage showing the shed completely engulfed in flames.

Paint cans, paint thinner, petrol and a maintenance vehicle were all scorched as the blaze tore through the maintenance shed roof.

Pictures from the scene also show the line marker completely charred, as well the entrance and insides of the shed.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus fought the blaze from multiple sides and gained control by 5.30am.

No one was injured during the incident and no evacuations were necessary.

The school, whose past pupils include former prime minister Tony Abbott and 2GB radio presenter Ben Fordham, continued lessons as normal on Thursday, with HSC students sitting their maths exams.

Fire and Rescue NSW investigators determined the line marker had started the inferno.

FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the St Ignatius’ school blaze is a reminder that calling 000 for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.
