The Morning Briefing: Trump Is Not Going Quietly Into That Perversion of Justice Night

It’s a side we don’t often see of Donald Trump. We are accustomed to seeing the wealthy businessman, the politician, and the father. How about the Grandfather? That happened this week.

It was Grandparents Day at four-year-old granddaughter Carolina’s school. Carolina’s parents are Lara and Eric Trump. Lara went along with the former president and filmed some of his visit.

The video shows Trump wearing a navy suit, white shirt and red tie, holding hands with Carolina as they navigate the school corridors. The young child, dressed in her school uniform, then takes the lead and takes the former president through her classroom doors.

She then briefly pauses and her mother is heard saying: ‘Hey Carolina, show him your desk. Show grandpa.’

Carolina quickly lets go of her grandfather’s hand and points to her desk as Trump crouches down and puts his arm around her shoulder.

The video ends there but Lara shared a separate photograph of Carolina with him in which they are posing with her teacher.

It’s pretty adorable stuff. You see Carolina holding Trump’s hand and walking him into her classroom as some of the adults turn and look at Trump. You can hear Lara prompt Carolina to show Grandpa her desk.

Carolina’s teacher posed for a photo.

No child sniffing or pervy behavior. Just a little girl showing her grandpa her classroom and her desk.

Children soften adults, particularly politicians. I wonder if he typically does these grandparent visits or if it was a campaign move. If he wasn’t running for president, I wouldn’t think twice. He’s running against DeSantis and spending millions against him in ads. For a candidate so far ahead in the polls, it seems unusual he only attacks one opponent, not any of the others, especially with Nikki Haley allegedly having a moment. We haven’t really seen Trump with any of his grandchildren very much. I remember one stroll across the White House lawn with Ivanka’s two oldest children when they were walking to Marine One with Trump.

The DeSantis family is a regular presence and those three little kids make for good photo ops with their parents. Not that I’ve grown cynical after years around politicians, or anything.

It’s a nice story for a crazy, ugly week in politics and current events.
