Yesterday, Keating has decried Anthony Albanese‘s submarine announcement as the “worst international decision by an Australian Labor government” since World War I.

With characteristic invective, Keating fired broadsides in just about every direction in an appearance at the National Press Club, with the former PM also describing Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defence Minister Richard Marles as “seriously unwise”.

Speaking this morning on Today, Independent MP Le echoed much of Keating’s sentiment.

“I agree so wholeheartedly with the former prime minister,” she said.

“This is costing us – not just financially – but it’s costing us in relationships as well.

“So I just don’t get that at this point in a time of cost-of-living crisis, and we’ve just spoken about the electricity prices, and families are struggling, we are spending $368 billion – I just don’t get it.”

Le claimed that in 20 years from now when the fleet are finalised, the state-of-the-art technology used in the submarines may no longer be cutting edge.

Are these the designs that could revolutionise air travel?

“It’s going to be in 20 years’ time, spending for something in 20 years’ time, and by that time, will the technology still be new for us?” she said.

“To be using in this to defend our country – there are other ways to defend our country.”
